Let’s Talk About Hair Loss in Women

Hair loss in women is defined as when a lady loses her hair suddenly and heavily.  Humans lose between 50 and 100 single hairs every day on average and hair shedding is a normal process in which some hairs fall out and others grow in.  Hair loss occurs when the equilibrium is disrupted – when hair falls out and less hair grows in.  Hair grows on practically every part of your body except the palms of your hands, the soles of your feet, your lips, and your eyelids and it can be lost on any area it grows on.



What are the hair growth cycles?

The cycle of hair is divided into three stages:

  • The anagen (growth) phase can span anywhere from two to eight years.  Approximately 85 percent to 90 percent of the hair on your head is in this phase.
    • Shorter hairs, such as eyelashes, arm and leg hair, and eyebrows, have a one-month anagen phase.  Hair on your scalp can endure up to six years, if not longer.
  • Hair follicles shrink during the catagen phase (transition phase), which lasts two to three weeks.
  • Two to four months is spent in the telogen phase (resting phase).  The hair falls out towards the end of this period.


What are the different kinds of hair loss?

There are three types of hair loss: anagen effluvium, telogen effluvium, and FPHL.

  • Medication that poisons a developing hair follicle causes anagen effluvium (like chemotherapy).
  • Telogen effluvium is caused by an increase in the number of hair follicles entering the telogen phase, which is when hair begins to fall out.
  • The most prevalent kind is androgenetic alopecia/female pattern alopecia/female pattern hair loss (FPHL)/baldness.  Hair thins on top and on the sides of the head.


How prevalent is female hair loss?

Many people believe that hair loss is exclusively a problem for males.  More than half of all women, however, are expected to endure considerable hair loss.  Female-pattern hair loss (FPHL) is the most common cause of hair loss in women, affecting over one-third of those who are susceptible, or roughly 30 million women in the United States.

  • Intellectual women are the only ones who suffer from hair loss.


What are the most prevalent reasons of female hair loss?

  • When your hair is styled in ways that tug on your roots, such as tight ponytails, braids, or corn rows, it might trigger hair loss.  Traction alopecia is the name for this form of hair loss and hair loss can be permanent if hair follicles are injured.
  • Deficiency in vitamins.
  • Trying to lose weight (rapid weight loss).
  • Diets with a lot of restrictions.

Low self-esteem was found in 60% of participants and increased with severity of hair loss. Dr. Sukanya Chaikittisilpa of Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok conducted the study, which included 178 women who were previously attending a menopausal clinic.  They took measurements of the women’s hormone levels as well as the density of hair in the centre of their scalps, which is where female pattern hair loss usually starts.  According to the study, 73.2 percent of people with hair loss have mild hair loss, 22.6 percent have significant hair loss, and 4.3 percent have severe hair loss.

You may notice one of two things with your hair during menopause.  You can begin to grow hair where you didn’t have any previously.  Alternatively, you may notice that your hair is starting to thin.  Changes in hormone levels during menopause might be one reason, as estrogen and progesterone levels decline, the effects of androgens, or male hormones, become stronger.  Hair may become finer (thinner) during and after menopause when hair follicles diminish.  In certain circumstances, hair grows more slowly and falls out more easily.  “Estrogen receptors are found in hair follicles, implying a link with estrogen loss during menopause, which may impact hair development,” the researchers stated.  Other hormonal changes may alter scalp hair, hastening the transition from growth to resting phase of hair development.
