23 Jul Meet Valerian
Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) is a perennial plant native to Europe and parts of Asia, and naturalized in North America. It has a very distinctive odor that many people find unpleasant – if you’ve ever opened a bag of our tisanes containing valerian root, you may have noticed it! It has been used as a medicinal herb since the time of Ancient Greece and Rome to treat insomnia. In the 16th century, it was used to treat nervousness, headaches, and heart palpitations, and psychological stress. Today, it can be consumed as a capsule, tincture or tea. It is often mixed with other botanicals to increase its sedating effects. We use valerian root in our Calm, Happy, Moon Cycle, Muscle Rest, Nerves, and Sleep blends.
