31 May detoxify with this powerful herb
Milk thistle is a beautiful plant that carries strong benefits and features! With its big bright and soft purple flowers and very rough, spiky exterior, milk thistle grows abundantly here in California. Seeming like another pesky weed, milk thistle is actually a very potent medicinal plant.
The seeds are the most beneficial part of the plant and are used in many herbal remedies including our Detox Tisane. Due to this plants rough nature, most of us don’t realize but it takes a bit of work to harvest the seeds that we eventually consume.
At the end of months, May and June, milk thistle is finished with its growing season, and then harvested. You can tell it’s ready when you are able to observe the pappus, (a white cottony fiber) appear on the purple flowers. To properly harvest, one must cut off the flower heads, dry them in a warm space for a week, then, transfer to a burlap bag to shake and allow the bulbs to tumble. Afterwards, by chopping the flower heads from the bulb base, the seeds are able to be removed.
Who knew the experience of harvesting these seeds is one of patience, as well as one of caution because of its spiky exterior? Something to think about when enjoying your next Detox cup of tea!
